About Regal Hound

The Real Hound store is motivated by a genuine love for sight hounds.

They are graceful, agile and elegant dogs with long necks, a high rib cage and small waist. The most familiar sight hounds include Italian Greyhounds, Greyhounds and Whippets with short hair and thin skin. They feel the cold in Winter months and in cooler climates. The less familiar sight hounds are Salikis, Galgos, Borzoi and Irish Wolf hounds. To ensure they are comfortable, specifically designed collars and coats for sighthounds are best.

TheRegal Hound store aims to source and provide the high quality, stylish and practical sight hound products such regal hounds deserve. If we don’t currently stock what you are looking for I would be happy to source from one of our many suppliers around the world. Whether it's hand made dog chews, hunting jackets from the United kingdom , or Martingale collars from Italy we aim to find the perfect item for your special hound.

Why the obsession with hounds you ask? I am proud Mum of Lilly, a sweet little 15 year old Italian Greyhound and Troy a retired racer who recently passed away from Osteosarcoma. The diagnosis and following months were devastating but Troy was regal, courageous, sweet and mild natured to the end, I treasure every single moment spent with him.

Anyone fortunate enough to adopt or foster a Greyhound will tell you what a joy they are. Sometimes described as the Unicorn of the dog world because they are quite magical and will quietly and gently put a spell on your heart as they have on many others throughout the centuries.

A little about Greyhound art and history... Aristocracy has always been entwined with the Greyhound throughout history. This beautiful and elegant breed is the only dog mentioned in the bible and referenced in sculptures and stone work from Egyptian times onwards. In England the first illustrations of Greyhounds date to the 9th century and in medieval times they were protected by rule of law.

The chosen breed of royalty, King Henry V111 favoured for their speed and grace in hunting for deer, foxes, hares and stags. They are often depicted in sculpture and art found in galleries around the globe. For example 'Eos' from The Royal collection is a famous painting (pictured) of Prince Albert's favourite Greyhound by painter Edwin Landseer. Sir Edwin Lansdeer also painted: Richard Cavendish with “Spot” the 6th Duke of Devonshire's Italian greyhound c1828.

Italian Greyhounds are also greatly referenced in art and culture and the subject of painters and sculptures throughout the ages mainly as their regal masters revered them. Catherine the Great of Russia 1729 -96 (pictured) is famous for her love of the Italian Greyhounds when her favourite Zamira died she stayed in her room for days too bereft to show her face. She buried Zamira in Peterhof Park with“ Beloved dog of the Great Queen”, etched on the tombstone over her tomb. There is still a national day in Russia in honour of the breed.

The breed was popular throughout Europe and in England during the 17th century. The Italian Greyhound is elegant but strong and resilient, particularly for such a small dog. They are incredibly fast and agile as their cousins and they love to run and chase. Whippets are the medium sized sight hounds that look similar, also having a gentle affectionate nature like Greyhounds and Iggy’s and are just as athletic, agile, graceful and strong. They are quiet and obedient yet, less fragile than Iggys and not as large as most Greyhounds making them a wonderful hound for families with small children. Why are there so many Greyhounds in need of homes? After the second world war Greyhounds became a racing dog, breeders were constantly needing winning dogs, many tracks were built in Europe and in the US. Billions of dollars and pounds were bet, lost and won in the gaming industry. It's a short career for the Greyhound if they are injured and even the winning dogs soon end up looking for a forever home far away from the track. There are many charities in Australia assisting in rescuing, caring for and rehoming.
